How long does a domain transfer take?

Transferring a .co.nz domain normally takes anywhere between 1 and 48hours - depending on where it is being transferred from.  Other domain extensions such as .com or .org can take longer (up to 7 days). The delay is due to the other registrar releasing the domain and us waiting for their administrative transfer process to complete.  During the transfer process, you may receive a Transfer Confirmation email.  You must click on the "Approve" link within that email in order for the transfer process to continue smoothly.

When you transfer a domain to Purple Dog, or if we are handling a transfer on your behalf, you can choose to keep your existing DNS and nameserver settings.  If you don't know what this means, please do ask us and we will explain.  In a nutshell, if you are changing the hosting server address where your email or website files are located (e.g. moving your web hosting from a previous provider to Purple Dog or somewhere else), then usually, this will require a DNS change (click here to to read more about DNS changes).

If any DNS changes are required, we can advise you on what to do.  You can usually change the nameserver address settings (where your domain points), from within your Purple Dog client account, or by requesting our assistance.  If you need extensive DNS management, please ask us about our optional extended DNS services, which are available at additional cost.

IMPORTANT: When any DNS changes are made to your domain name, it can affect delivery of your email / website / other services. If you have any doubts, please let us know prior to making any changes to you domain's DNS settings. When any changes are made to your DNS, the update must be communicated to all of the servers and routers across the globe.  This process is entirely normal and is known as propagation.  You should expect between 3 - 5 days for such DNS changes to propagate globally, although often is can be faster.

Important: Please note: Once the transfer of a domain to Purple Dog and/or DNS changes have been initiated, the domain MUST be allowed to fully propagate before ANY further updates or changes can be made otherwise it is possible that connected services to the domain can get impacted.  In other words, once changes have been made, you cannot easily revert them.
