Set up Email Forwarding

This feature allows a copy of any email sent to one address to be forwarded to another email address. This lets you use one account to check mail sent to several email addresses, or to forward copies of email to another person.

To view or add email forwarders for a specific domain on your account, you will first need to log in to your webhosting cPanel account.

Once you are logged in, navigate down to the Email Management section, and click the Email Forwarders icon.

Add a Mail Forwarder

  • Click Add Forwarder.
  • After Address to Forward, type the email you wish to forward. If you have more than one domain on your account, be sure to select the correct domain from the drop-down menu.

Basic options:

To forward all email, click Forward to email address and type the address to which mail should be forwarded.
To discard incoming messages and automatically send a failure notice to the sender, click Discard with error to sender.  This is useful if you are planning to cease using an email address.

  • Click Add Forwarder.

To view the route that a forwarded message takes, select Trace in the list of forwarded addresses. This makes it possible, for example, to locate a mail routing error.

Forward email to someone / somewhere else without using a cPanel account

You can create an email forwarder from any address you like, even if it does not have a corresponding cPanel email account actually set up.

Scenario 1
Let's say you set up a new Google Adwords account for a specific purpose and you want to track emails sent to that address (but not create an account for it)  e.g. [email protected].  Once you've set this forwarder up, any email sent to this address will be forwarded to the destination you've specified.  This is great for receiving emails where you never need to reply.

Scenario 2
Perhaps you simply want to forward all given emails to someone else to deal with, and you never want to see those emails?  In which case, you could simply set up the forward as above, without the need for setting up an email account on the server.  If the cPanel email account already exists on the server, you can delete it, and then set up the forwarder.  WARNING: deleting an existing cPanel email account will erase all historical emails on the server that are attached to that email account.

This will mean that all email arriving from now on will be instantly forwarded to the destination you have specified without being stored on the server. If you do not delete the cPanel account whose mail is being forwarded, then both that account as well as the forwarded address will receive the mails.
